CardboardSlime's DEATH BATTLE Predictions: Mystique Sonia VS Cerebella
“There are some things one is born to wear, and I had obviously been fated to wear this hat.”
―
―
Since the dawn of fashion, the hat remains as humanity's most iconic headwear. Its simple nature has led to many different purposes: protection, looks, status and cultural traditions. Yet it finds itself as another use that's rarely heard of...weaponry. While Viking helmets are the only recorded use of hats as weapons in real life, in the realm of fiction, many hats have been used as makeshift and unorthodox tools of combat. We've seen hats used as boomerangs, whirling buzzsaws and possessing people, but sometimes you just need a hat that can grows arms and beat the snot outta people! These two beautiful brawny gals wear their horned hat companions with pride and fight together as one to make a fearsome duo of pain. But today, we will determine which of them will come out on top...with their hats in a DEATH BATTLE!
Before We Begin
Hello! This is my first VS prediction blog. I'm pretty new to this so feedback would be nice! Also this blog is not affiliated with the official DEATH BATTLE! crew and the G1 DB fan blog. Enjoy!
For Mystique Sonia, the Hero: 108 show will be her primary source material. Comics, games and other side material will be considered. I do need to bring up two Hero 108 pieces of media: Hero: 108 Online and the novellas. Both will not be used due to the former being defunct and having very little surviving content to work off with, while the latter is not translated to English yet. Until more information are coming out, they will be disregarded. This means all of the info may not truly cover all of Hero 108, so keep that in mind.
For Cerebella, Skullgirls 2nd Encore will be the primary source material with Skullgirls Mobile and Skullgirls Webtoon serving as the secondary material along with statements and other official content. Note that the SG WEBTOON is currently ongoing and as of this blog's writing, Season 1 has been wrapped up and will enter into Season 2 in the foreseeable future. So there's a good chance this blog will be outdated soon.

Background
Mystique Sonia
"KEPLEH!"
Many years ago, humans and animals in the Hidden Kingdom lived together in peaceful harmony. But then, a wicked trickster named High Roller, fooled the animals into thinking the humans are their enemies. One animal named Monkey King, however, did not fell for High Roller's deceit and secretly defected from the animal's side. Chaos reign, until a new army of heroes, led by the now disguised Monkey King named Commander Apetrully (really concealing name there) to protect the humans and came together to end the war. With First Squad at the helm, they are Lin Chung, Jumpy Ghostface, Mighty Ray, Mr. No Hands and of course...Mystique Sonia.
Little is known on Mystique Sonia's background and history (living it up to her namesake). Some bits of her past life we do know is that she lived with no sisters, had a mug when she was five years old and was cursed by a spell from an unknown source, turning any lovesick sap into a Yaksha, a hat demon that resides on her head forever. When heroes at their base, Big Green, were around, she dreamed of joining the team and becoming among the top heroines of the crew. Her beauty and cooking did made her a nice asset but she lacked the strength to become a worthy hero. So she trained very hard to one day reach the top. And eventually, she did. She became one of Big Green's top members and joined First Squad and worked along with the likes of Lin Chung and Mighty Ray, to help defeat and reform the animals and put an end to High Roller's plan.
Cerebella
"Can't turn down a fan!"
Born in a country that got turned into a No Man's Land, an apocalyptical wasteland caused by the resulting war on the Skullgirl, Cerebella (real name: Cassandra Veranos) was left with no parents with Vice Versa being her only companion, a heirloom left possibly by her blacksmith mother. She was taken in by her new father Vitale and her new family, the Medici Mafia. Raised and grew up in her new home, she partakes in the circus job and became a circus sensation, with her being known for Vice-Versa's strength and her acrobatics. Cerebella would be known as the Tumbling Dynamo and she along with Vice Versa's circus acts would become the star attraction of Canopy Kingdom.
However, that's all a cover up for her one true purpose, being the mafia's legbreaker.
Cerebella was trained to become one of the fearsome members of the mafia. She was taught by Black Delilah on the art of knifeplay. On her first day as candidate on Black Delilah's mafia, she was selected by Regina to complete a few tests, along with Feng and Beatrix. Cerebella completes Hubert's obstacle course, her first test. On her second test, she was tasked to solve a puzzle box to obtain an item for Taliesin. However, she got frustrated and with one minute left, she smashed the puzzle box open, breaking the item along with it. But Taliesin accepted it, as he didn't meant it had to be in one piece (ah loopholes). Cerebella would later notice Feng and her box being sabotage by Beatrix and offered Feng hot chocolate, promising that she would not be self-centered as Beatrix. For her final test, she and Beatrix would fight in the ring and whoever gets KO'd or leave the ring would lose. As she and Beatrix fought, Beatrix would pull a dirty trick and aim her knives at Vitale, who was coming in. Cerebella steps out of the ring and saved her father from the attack. Cerebella would take the loss gracefully due to the rules and Feng would return the favor by buying Cerebella hot cocoa, but Vitale declares Cerebella as the true victor as she would've won anyways. Making Cerebella now part of the mafia.
At some point after her night's performance, Cerebella was tasked by Vitale to find the Life Gem, stolen by Nadia Fortune. After tracking her down to the Grand Cathedral and taking down Valentine and Double, she would encounter Nadia and defeat her by crushing her into nothing, revealing the Life Gem. Refusing to make a wish from the Skull Heart, Cerebella returns home to give her dad back the gem. She would celebrate her victory but ponders if what she did was the right thing for her family...
Of course, with Skullgirls having multiple storylines, this wouldn't be Cerebella's only story. In Eliza's route, Cerebella would join Eliza, by Vitale's admission, in the hunt for the Skullgirl and Ms. Fortune, taking on anyone getting in the way of their mission. Eventually though, Eliza would double cross her and after a duel, Cerebella would be killed by Eliza's hand; getting her blood sucked and drained of all of her life. Cerebella in the Skullgirls WEBTOON would join Eliza, again, with Black Deliah joining in this time, but time will tell how Cerebella will fare there...
Experience and Skills
Mystique Sonia
Sonia is one of Big Green's finest heroes and one of the elite members of First Squad. While her training regime is unknown as she is only shown to lift dumbbells as part of her training (perhaps self-taught?), she makes up for it with her experience. She fought many animals and bested them alongside with First Squad, whenever through fights or competitions, and has helped them reform from High Roller's influence. She has tangled and taken on and out many animals forces with her teammates, from rhinos to bulls, elephants, camels, lions, ligers, baboons, rabbits and more. And these aren't your typical normal animals either, as they have human-like intelligence and special powers due to their bodies and natural abilities, whatever be deers that can send weaponized soundwaves from their tuning fork antlers, cheetahs that can move in a blur and throw spots and play shuttlecock (read: hackey sack) and rabbits that can jump rope fast enough to create protective barriers, throw carrot grenades and fart knockout gas...m'kay.
She and Yaksha despite being separate individuals, can move together very well with no trouble, making them excellent partners. Yaksha can easily match and flow well with Sonia's actions, almost acting as they are one. Sonia is good at thinking on the fly, letting her and Yaksha adapt pretty well at whatever throws at them.
Sonia also seems to be a quick learner. She learns to play the flute well in a short moment of time and quickly mastered Crane King's super chi, though she fails to consider the negative consequences of the technique, being it puts the strain on her body and can make it uncontrollable.
Cerebella
Growing up in the Medici Mafia, Cerebella would learn a few good skills, being in both part of the circus and mafia crew. Her acrobatics and Vice-Versa's strength has made her quite a spectacle in her circus career, gaining her a lot of popularity. These skills translate very well when she's put into combat. Like her opponent, Vice-Versa responds to Cerebella's actions seamlessly well, fighting together as if they are one. Both can act together responsively when pulling off combos on the fly and can adjust their body to suit whatever action that needs to be made. They have shown good teamwork tactics too, such as Vice-Versa holding hold of its foe for Cerebella to wail on them and Cerebella aiding Vice Versa to perform her BlockBuster (read: super), Ultimate Showstopper, by handstanding to reveal a hidden blade while Vice-Versa grabs an opponent, jumps high and then going down to impale its foe to Cerebella's blade. Overall, her ability to wield a legendary Living Weapon with excellent coordination is impressive to many.
Speaking of blades, Cerebella was taught by Black Delilah on the art of knifeplay, letting her wield hidden blades together well and incorporates with her already smooth fighting style. She has taken on most of the Skullgirls cast, ranging from a schoolgirl with a parasite hair, to a murderous ninja nurse and even a literal punny catburgular who can fall apart and use her decapitated head to attack. Cerebella has dealt with the many weird and wild crew of Skullgirls with one goal in mind: to please her father's wishes.
Equipment and Support
Mystique Sonia
Yaksha
Sonia's lil' hat critter. Yaksha was once a normal being who loved Sonia and became cursed when declaring his love for her by saying her name three times, turning into a fiercely loyal hat demon creature. Sonia actually went through two Yakshas throughout the show. One died from a liger's fire breath and she had another one that was originally an unnamed tank driver. Being a Yaksha isn't too bad as he can use his elastic body and arms to stretch, squash and transform in many ways to help aid his lover in combat. He's also capable of fighting independently, so he doesn't always reside on Sonia's head to do so (though he prefers to be close to her). Yaksha's abilities will be covered more in-depth in the Abilities section.
Turtle
A standard animal vehicle issued for all heroes at Big Green. These green fellas can carry someone on their shell and transport them across the land and sea. They have been used as makeshift motors for tanks or anything that needs moving and their shell provides excellent defenses. Give them a cannon attachment and they become mini tanks, shooting cannonballs at their foes. They also hide somewhere safe while their heroes do the fighting.
Oh, and bullying a turtle will alert a bunch of other turtles to come in and beat the aggressor into a pulp, as Mighty Ray found out the hard way.
Buns & Bun Seeds
Her trademark food of choice. Sonia can grow a bunch of buns to provide food for Yaksha and her teammates via her magic saliva (gross). The buns for the most part are normal food that sate a person's hunger. However, there are special buns that Sonia can grow to give additional effects to the eater.
Jelly Flower Soft Buns: These will make things soft like jelly for an hour. Shown by the deers eating it and having their antlers turn soft, preventing them from using them as tune forks for their soundwave attacks.
Strength Buns: Grows her muscles or enlarge Sonia's arms and hand disproportionally large to boost her physical strength for a limited time. Eating too much however can make her bloated and sick, though she still retains the boosted strength.
Stick
In the Hero 108 pilot and various official artworks, Sonia carries a stick to hold the buns in place and pokes Yaksha in the butt. And probably good for stabbing people. She never uses it in the show, however.
Flute
Crafted by the Panda King, Sonia carries a bamboo flute and plays sweet tunes from it. Its melodic charm has been shown to draw snakes in by the sound, letting them enjoy the lovely notes. She also is shown to communicate dragons with it.
Cerebella
Vice-Versa
Cerebella's burly horned hat monster. This absolute unit of a hat is a Living Weapon created by ancient weaponsmiths and forged from an element called Theonite. Given by Cerebella at birth, she develops a mental bond with it and both act together as one in a seemingly flawless manner. Vice-Versa can use its massive bulky arms to smash, throw and slam its opponent into paste or restrict foes with its arms to let Cerebella get in free hits. It also has some limited degree of shape-shifting; enlarging or shrinking parts of its body or changing their form to suit the wearer's need. Vice-Versa also has some degree of self-awareness, judging by its expression. More abilities will be explained in-depth at the Abilities section.
Hidden Blades
Cerebella can eject concealed blades and knives from her boots to extend her attack range and to catch her foes off-guard for a surprise attack.
Powers & Abilities
Mystique Sonia
Tongue
| The source of all of her "freaky" fanart |
Wind Manipulation: Can turn her tongue into a fan to blow her foes away and can shoot a wind projectile in the Hidden Kingdom Showdown flash game.
Curse
Sonia was cursed so that anyone who are smitten with the heroine says to her "I LOVE YOU!" three times will turn into a Yaksha and go after Sonia. The effect isn't permanent as if Sonia gets her looks ruined, their love for her beauty will vanish and return back to their normal selves. Some Yakshas won't change back however, showing that they have an unconditional love for Sonia. The effect works on both males and females, though both Yakshas that Sonia had are male.
Healing Kiss
Sonia can kiss Yaksha to make him feel better when he's tired, letting him get fired up and back into action.
Super Chi
An ancient discipline that refocuses the body's energy. Upon seeing the technique from Crane King during his room clean up, Sonia copied the technique and used it for herself to get rid of her tiredness. leading her to become super fast. She can move in a blur, making her nigh unseenable and blitz anyone on contact as well as doing any action super fast. As a side effect, this also made her hyper, fidgety and talk really fast. However, overuse and lack of proper control of this technique can put a strain on her body and make it hard to control her speed, eventually losing control without the use of weighted gear to slow her down and getting rest to restore her balance.
Toon Force
Sonia has some light showings of cartoony abilities, such as being burned by lava and coming out fine though charred, being flattened and being inflated by Elephant King to become normal again, being flattened by conveyers to turn into a kite (seen above) and being turned into and used as a top.
Resistances/Immunity
Empathic Manipulation: Was not affected by Queen Peacock's beauty whose looks and her tail has caused people to fall in love with her (above).
Fragrance Manipulation: Withstood a stench that knocked out Jumpy Ghostface. Though has limits as she passed out from the stench of dirty laundry that was building up in Big Green in the episode Bamboo Castle and she got knocked out by a rabbit's fart (yes that is a thing).
Yaksha
Body Control and Shapeshifting
Yaksha has shown numerous times that he can control his body and transform to suit whatever he needs for his lover. From turning into parachutes, trampolines, slingshot, shields, shock absorber platform, various clothing accessories, hair dryer, umbrella and...toilet. He can also turn into different animals, mainly to tell First Squad that the animals kidnapped Sonia. Yaksha, like Sonia, also has cartoony abilities, shown to getting flattened and pop right back into normal. His body is pretty much nigh-malleable.
Elasticity
Yaksha's long arms can be stretched and extended to increase his attack range, lift Sonia up, make a slingshot or have really long legs for travelling over and getting her out of the way. Even his whole "body" can be stretched, letting him be used as a net to deflect cannonballs.
Flight
Can turn his arms into a propeller and fly. With Sonia's tongue and Yaksha's arms as wings, both can act and fly together like a plane...okay.
Thermal Vision
Yaksha's eyes can be used to detect invisible enemies like chameleons.
Self-Petrification
In the Hero:108 Origins comic, he can turn himself into stone to hold and restrict the lions in place...at the cost of his life.
Magic Portal...?
Yaksha can transport someone who is entering a hole and tube and get them to exit out of him instead. Great trick for parties.
Cerebella
Fist and Feet Combat
While Vice-Versa does the fisticuffs for her, Cerebella can chime in with her own punches and kicks on certain occasions.
Vice-Versa
Hand to Hand Combat and Superhuman Strength
With those big burly arms and hands, you bet Vice-Versa can easily mop the foes within seconds the moment it starts attacking! Vice-Versa can smack and jab opponents hard enough to send them flying and can restrict their movement by grabbing them really hard.
Vice-Versa can alter its body to suit the wearers' needs. It can conceal its massive arms into short stubby hands (seen above), enlarge and shrink its horns or turn them into ram horns, turn into a "bunny", and can make its "body" bigger to turn into a makeshift sack or parachute to stuff enemies in for an internal pounding.
Transmutation & Attack Reflection
With certain attacks, Vice-Versa and Cerebella can turn incoming projectiles into diamonds and reflect them back to their opponents.
Vice-Versa can glide into the air with its hands for a short while.
Moveset
Normals:
Tune Up: A basic jab that can chain up to two times.
Kneecapper: A low chop.
Trapeze Act: Attacks with a series of aerial jabs. Number of jabs depend on how much the Light Punch button is pressed.
Medici Shakedown: Elbows foe, causing a stagger effect on them.
Enforcer Elbow: Lowers Vice Versa so it can attack with their elbow.
Slap Chop: Vice Versa does a mid-air slap. Probably great as a kitchen tool.
Tent Stake Hammer: Vice Versa slams his hands onto the ground.
Boost-iere: Vice Versa thrust his arms up to do a muscle flex position. Launches foes upwards into the air.
Glide n' Chop/Bellaglide: Both Cerebella and Vice-Versa glide in the air for awhile, following it up with a downward clap.

Diamond Scratch: Does a low kick with the blade on her foot.
Single Cut: Extends leg to slice enemy with her blade from her boot.
Cugine Kick: Does a turning drop kick while holding onto Vice Versa.
Loop de Loop: Does a flip kick that launches the opponent into the air.
Brilliant Dropkick: Uses both legs for a dropkick.
Adagio Swing: Does a double flipkick, then spins around and does another with knives coming out of her boot while holding onto Vice Versa.
Medici Legbreaker: Vice Versa attempts to leg sweep the opponent.
Princess Cut: At air, does a downward kick with blades coming out of both shoes.
Titan Knuckle: Vice Versa attacks with a fierce punch that sends the opponent sliding.
Unbreakable Elbow: Vice Versa attacks with an elbow drop the knocks the opponent down.
Specials:
Diamond Drop: A short reach command grab that flings the opponent in the air and impales them via Vice-Versa’s horns.
Merry Go Rilla: Far reaching command grab in which Cerebella swings around her enemy before smacking them to the ground.
Excellebella: An anti-air command grab where Vice-Versa will hold the opponent by their legs and Cerebella will slap them around a bit before Vice-Versa send them flying away with a powerful smack.
Grab Bag: Aerial command grab which catches grounded opponents, Cerebella uses Vice-Versa like a parachute and ensnares the opponent inside, beating them to a pulp as you float gently to the ground.
Lock n' Load: Chargeable move where Vice-Versa stocks his arm like a gun and upon release delivers a hard, piston like straight jab. Has a .02% percent chance of a crudely drawn cat coming out.
Tumbling Run: A command dash which gives Cerebella a variety of options; she can cancel it prematurely, cross her opponent up, or straight up attack. This move also has super armor properties. The distance of the run depends on the strength of the pressed kick button.
- Run Stop: Take a wild guess.
- Kanchou: Vice Versa shoves their fingers up the enemy's behind. Based on an old Japanese prank.
- Battle Butt: Headbutts enemy with Vice Versa forming ram horns. If the foe gets KO'd by this move, an effect displays "2000" and an additional hit stop effect plays out.
Pummel Horse: Overhead command throw where Vice-Versa will come off Cerebella’s head and hold down the opponent allowing her to pummel them. Has OTG (off the ground) and stagger properties.
Diamond Deflector: Finger guns as they reflects projectiles. Probably a Jojo reference.
Devil Horns: Vice Versa thrusts his hands up with his index and pinky fingers held out like a pair of horns, hitting ground users extremely close to Cerebella. Plays a guitar riff every time this move is used. Rock on!
Cere-Copter: Cerebella spins Vice Versa which causes to tornado spin on her head. Reflects projectiles. SPIN TO WIN!
Block Busters:
Diamond Dynamo: Vice-Versa swings his arms around in a large radial 360 motion as Cerebella skips along forward.
Ultimate Show Stopper: Cerebella grabs the opponent and proceeds to mercilessly smash them into the ground until she tosses Vice-Versa (with them in his grasp) skyward and ends it with Vice-Versa forcefully impaling them on a giant sword that Cerebella balances on one.
Diamonds are Forever: Cerebella lifts up a chunk of the ground and tosses it into the air. She then winds up and jettisons it at her opponent, turning it into a diamond in the process. Has Unlimited Super Armor before the flash.

Forms/Summons
Mystique Sonia
Swan
After entering a mystical cave that puts a curse on anyone who enters it gets turned into an animal based on their inner self, Sonia becomes a swan, as it reflects her beauty, grace and maybe deadliness (seriously, don't mess with swans). Though she loses her old abilities like her stretchy tongue, she does gain a new ability where she can turn her wings into a spinning propeller to blast her foes with intense wind...just like how she does that with her tongue. Okay, maybe not that new. Other than that, she attacks a bear with her swan legs and wings. Also, despite one would think, no she never used her wings for flight. To exit this form, Sonia needs to enter the cave again but by into the chimney pipe smokestack instead.
Yakshatron (unofficial name)
By doing the magic of eating 100 buns, Yaksha turns into a giant mech that is piloted by First Squad to defeat the giant Zebra Bros. fusion. All of First Squad innate abilities are used in this form; Lin Chung's agility, Jumpy's carrot projectile, Mighty Ray's electricity thrust and Mr. No Hands' flight, and Sonia's tongue sword. Yaksha does need a full crew to operate this hat mech, however.
Scorpion Yaksha
Yaksha wraps up Mighty Ray and turns into a giant scorpion with Mighty Ray as the end of the tail. Mighty Ray blasts the enemy scorpion with his electric eyeball blasts while Yaksha moves around and aims with his tail.
Cerebella
Variants
In the Skullgirls Mobile game, with the use of relics, Cerebella can summon a parallel version of herself in various color palletes that have their own unique abilities/debuffs and elemental types to contend against her enemies.

Scaling
Mystique Sonia
Mighty Ray
Mighty Ray has dealt with Sonia on their rivalry and has competed and fought her a few times. While Sonia is weaker in terms of strength, she has shown to beaten him or at least be on par with him and did endured his electric blasts on the episode, Peacock Castle. So she should scale to him, eye blast in terms of durability and downscale in terms of strength.
- Mighty Ray vaporized an entire mountain with his eye blast (7.84 kilotons TNT)
- Mighty Ray blasted the ground to leave a crater to trap the rhinos, though the rhinos got out of the hole shortly after (49.6 kilotons - 99 kilotons of TNT)
- Mighty Ray held onto a palm tree and resisted the vacuum wave from a monster that's strong enough to suck up islands (29 kilotons of TNT)
- Gets piled on by a group of five lions and blasted them all off. For reference, an average fully grown male lion is 420 lbs/190.5 kg. (2100 lbs/952.5 kg)
- Mighty Ray dodged many of the crocodile's sun beams
Rest of First Squad
Being part of the team, Sonia and Yaksha should at least be comparable and keep up with her teammates.
- Lin Chung dodged lasers shot by giant fireflies
- Jumpy intercepted arrows with his jump rope barrier
- Jumpy can jump rope fast enough to slice a carrot
- Mr. No Hands got blasted by a tank cannon
High Roller's Animal Army
Being a show all about a war between humans and animals engaging in battles...and non-violent competitions, Sonia and Yaksha would face off many animals throughout the show and has won or at least shown to contend with most of them. She and her team has also fought High Roller before, so she should be comparable to him.
- Queen Pangolin casually lifts up three humans chained together
- Zebra Bros. held up a broken pillar of a bell tower for a lengthy time
Cerebella
Skullgirls Cast
While she did not fight everyone, she should be on close equal footing with nearly everyone through use of chain scaling. Cerebella defeated Valentine, Double, and Ms. Fortune in her storyline so any feats and scaling they have can be given to Cerebella too. The Skullgirl, Marie, is an odd one however. While Cerebella did defeat her, Marie did not used her full power at the time when fighting in her boss fight, so Cerebella will downscale to her.
- Filia kicks Peacock hard enough to crater a wall
- Valentine dodged tommy machine gunfire and implied it was too slow.
- Peacock can outrun explosions from its point plank dentation, according to a Steam Trading card.
- Marie tore the upper part of the Medici Tower off and threw it at a blimp (3847.1 tons of TNT / 1.46024992e13 joules and 1.8253124e13 N for lifting power)
Weaknesses
Mystique Sonia
And on the topic of separation, while Sonia can fight fine without Yaksha, she would lose out on a few abilities that might've benefited her when they're together. Should Yaksha die however, Sonia will become emotionally devastated and will be unable to move on or do anything, leaving her utterly heartbroken. The only way to get Yaksha back again is by her curse, which is situational and isn't reliable in most circumstances due to the specific conditions needing to be met.
Cerebella
Despite her amazing skills, Cerebella has her faults. Her close-mindedness, bullheadedness and stubbornness has landed her on hot water at times and even led to being killed in Eliza's story mode. Being a grappler, she needs to get into her opponent's range to really dish out the pain with her throws, so projectiles and long-range attacks can keep her at bay, though she does have ways to get around that.
Losing Vice-Versa won't leave her helpless and can still fight but she would lose out on tons of her moves and abilities, severely limiting her options. She also does not take well on anyone insulting the Medici Mafia and will lash out in rage.
Before The Verdict
The story mode of Skullgirls operates on a...weird timeline. While many of the cast stories are self-contained, some of them have intersected each other before. Most of them however, have contradictions or retcons depending on the character. For Cerebella's case, she defeated the Skullgirl and Ms. Fortune by herself, while in Eliza's route, Cerebella teams up with Eliza to defeat Fortune but gets killed by Eliza while looking for the Skullgirl. Plus, Marie's Skullgirl powers has been somewhat inconsistent throughout the story mode and doesn't seem to have a defined limit, making scaling to her iffy. Double's story ending reveals that all of the story timelines are done by Aeon and Venus, the goddesses of Skullgirls, that created many different scenarios (including the currently ongoing WEBTOON) that will converge into one. These are more What-If scenarios rather that connecting storylines. There is a planned to be canon story mode once Black Dahlia, Marie and Umbrella are released, which of this writing, they are. The Skullgirls FAQ even mentioned in an interview that the stories are non-canon:
"None of the character endings are canon, although some of them do contain "true events" from the overall story. There are plans to make a canon story eventually, but Alex Ahad has said that he needs Umbrella, Marie and Black Dahlia to be playable in order to make the first part of the canon story."
- Skullgirls FAQ
So, should we disregard all of the events scenarios here due to being not canonical?
In short, no. For several reasons.
One, practicality. Many of the Skullgirls cast have very little direct feats themselves and are reliant on each other to in order to even get a sense of their power and potential. Limiting to one timeline will leave out others that have vital feats to scale, rendering most of the cast's feats unknown.
And two, since all of the stories are more akin to alternate scenarios/routes, many of the feats in different stories are what possibly the cast can perform. Plus, DEATH BATTLE has done scaling with characters on different routes such as Fire Emblem's Dmitri, whose game, FE Three Houses has different routes depending on what team you chose. All of the character can scale mostly to each other based on their interactions despite their feats shown on opposing routes, as they can scale to their potential anyways. So in Cerebella's case, it shouldn't be too different here.
Though Marie's full power is inconsistent, her boss fight is her form with only a fraction of the Skull Heart's power and is her weaker form. Practically everyone bested Marie in that state while very few contested Marie on higher levels of power. Most of the cast should at least downscale to Marie and the most of the cast don't seem to have major contradicting power gaps between themselves (barring Eliza, Double and Marie). Double, Eliza and Marie have been consistently shown to be the top tiers, in lore at least, besting nearly everyone. So Skullgirls does have somewhat of a defined power lore tier list.
To summarize, all feats/scaling will be taken to consideration from different storylines due to pragmatic reasons and being set up as merely different scenarios.
Lightspeed Skullgirls?
Two fighters, Peacock and Robo-Fortune, have moves that lets them shoot a laser beam at their foe. Said attack is possible for the enemy to block as the laser comes out. There are some contention on if these beams are truly lightspeed. Taken from VS Battles Wiki, here are the following criteria for a laser beam to be deemed a truly "lightspeed".
- The beam refracts in a new material, such as a liquid or...
- The beam diffuses in a reasonably realistic way or reflects off a material that it can be expected to, such as a non-magical mirror.
- The beam is called lightspeed by reliable sources.
- It is stated to be composed/consisting of photons or light itself, again by a reliable source.
- It has its origin at a realistic source of light, such as a camera.
As well as disqualifications:
- It is shown at different speeds in the same material.
- It is tangible and can be interacted with physically by normal humans.
- They do not travel in straight lines (unless you can prove refraction/reflection, see above.)
Robo-Fortune will be up first due to having more lasers on her kit, thus giving more showings. Her moves are called lasers...that's it. That's the only qualification Robo-Fortune has. Unfortunately for this robo killer kitty, her laser specials have traits that make it hard to call it a true lightspeed laser. Many of her angled lasers have been shown to move at different speeds (most likely for gameplay balance), with her chest beams and eye beams being the slowest, her arm beams traveling a short distance before accelerating and her Blockbuster Cannon super, having the beam travel in a single frame. As real lasers don't move at different speeds within the same material, it would be hard to qualify as lightspeed.
Peacock's on the other hand, fares a bit better. It's called a laser, travels in a straight line and the lasers on various special moves all travel across the screen on a single frame, only differences is the size of the laser depending on the version of the move, which doesn't affect the factors. So it's possible Peacock's laser is lightspeed.
To conclude, yes and no. Peacock's laser may be considered lightspeed while RF does not. Since Robo-Fortune is a non-canon character (...up until she appeared in Annie's story mode (how???)), Peacock's lightspeed laser may be feasible for scaling for the rest of the canon cast.
Verdict
Foreword
This is among one of my favorite matchups. The interactions with their hats, banter, soundtrack (oh wait) and fighting style would make for one of the more cooler and distinct fights out there. Both connections of them are simple but unique; girls known for their beauty and brawn fighting with their living horned hat companion. I also both got into Hero 108 and Skullgirls, albeit late as I watched Hero 108 on Youtube far after the actual show ended and got into SG around Umbrella was released. I do like Sonia and Yaksha's design due to their gothic and origami kind of look. She can be irritating at times, but her friendly personality and love of her Yaksha kinda makes up for it. Cerebella is one of my mains due to her brutal strength and fun moveset.
But enough of my gushing, lets settle on which girl with hat-titude wins on this hat-ic brawl!
Stats
Both series are somewhat tricky in terms of finding stats and feats. This is due to Hero: 108 generally being obscure in VS debates, leaving the show under-researched and Sonia not having much calcs in terms of direct feats (and the fact the cast do not have any canon height listed, making many calcs difficult to determine). Skullgirls on the other hand has not much feats for the cast, making them heavily reliant on cross-scaling to each other. That said, they should have enough to be at least viable for this debate.
Ironically, despite Cerebella and Vice-Versa's brawny appearance, Sonia and Yaksha takes the power and durability. Sonia's 2.55 Gigaton TNT cannonball feat immensely blows Cerebella's 478 TNT rock turned diamond punching feat out of the water. However, that feat does require Sonia to be overloaded on strength buns...which makes her very sick and not be in a good condition to fight. This unfortunately makes the Gigaton ball feat unusable due to the conditions. Luckily, Sonia doesn't need that and can scale to Mighty Ray's holding onto a tree from an island sucking monster feat, which is 29 kilotons of TNT. Which still puts ahead of Cerebella's diamond punching feat.
Sonia tanking Mighty Ray's lightning blasts puts her around 46 to 99 kilotons of TNT. Cerebella doesn't have a direct durability feat and might scale to taking hits from Marie instead, putting her around 3847.1 tons of TNT. Even if Cerebella scales her durability to Marie's attack, she still falls short of Sonia's range.
Speed is where things get muddy. On low ends, Cerebella can react to Parasoul's bullets and she can scale to Valentine, who dodged tommy machine guns point blank, whereas Yaksha caught an arrow mid-flight and Sonia dodged and ran away from a cannonball, making Cerebella faster of the two. On high ends, both have relativistic speed feats with Sonia being 32c and Cerebella being 9c. However, theses feats do have problems. For Sonia, that feat comes from her aforementioned overloaded on buns, meaning she won't be able to pull that feat normally, not to mention she's immobile. The 9c from Robo-Fortune's laser is not a true lightspeed laser due to inconsistent speed. Luckily though, Peacock's is deemed possibly legitimate due to fitting many of the criteria, letting Cerebella scale to her. Sonia does have speed feats outside of the chucking cannonball feat but many do not come close to matching Peacock's laser. With scaling, Sonia does come close with Lin Chung and Mighty Ray's laser dodging feats, but both lack calcs too, leaving Sonia's true speed unknown.
Overall, Sonia takes both strength and durability. Speed is much more tricky due to both of the girls having very few calculable feats for them. A safe bet for now is that they are tied, since laser dodging is shown a couple times, so Sonia might be comparable on those speeds.
Arsenal
For equipment, both Yaksha and Vice-Versa will be covered more in-depth in the ability section, so they will not be included here for now. Sonia holds the quantity advantage at first, but most of her gear are situational at best. Flute and stick are practically useless and her turtle is more of a transport unit than a fighter. Even with the cannon attachment, they are too slow to hit Cerebella and even then Cerebella can deflect them with her Diamond Deflector. Combine with their slow movement, they won't be much of use against Cerebella. Buns are a different story as they do have special properties that can help aid Sonia. Strength buns boosts Sonia's strength which further increases the power gap. As mentioned, being overloaded lets her use her most powerful feat but makes her very sick and nigh-immobile, letting Cerebella taking the opportunity to wail on her...up until Sonia grabs her and chucks her into orbit. It does have a time limit but Sonia's power gap makes it easy to KO Cerebella before the timer could finish. Both of them having the speed tie however, making it hard to get the jump on her.
Jelly Buns might at first, be an easy way to incapitate Cerebella. Should Sonia somehow shoves up a jelly soft bun into Cerebella's mouth, her body becoming jelly would make it harder for her to fight. Problem is that ONLY Cerebella is affected, as in there's still Vice-Versa to deal with. Due to being a sentient hat, he has no mouth, making it impossible for him to be affected. At best, Cerebella and Vice-Versa would struggle to adapt to this. At worst, Vice Versa will jump out of her head and make a beeline towards Sonia, continuing the fight on his own.
In comparison, Cerebella has her only equipment, her hidden blades. Though it doesn't give her quite a power amp or support, she does have it at all times and their function is reliable enough to get the job done. Its concealed nature would catch Sonia off-guard but after that Sonia would wise up and become more cautious. Still, having hidden blades to extend her attack range is still more useful overall.
Sonia has more equipment but are not very useful in terms of practice, leaving her buns to give her any notable edge. Cerebella has only her hidden knives but are more reliable in terms of being readily available and not having a significant drawback. Ultimately, arsenal evens out for both of them.
Abilities
Lets compare Yaksha and Vice-Versa first, given both of them make up the majority of the girls' moveset. Both of these horned hats have remarkably similar abilities: long limbs, shapeshifting, body control and flight. However, Yaksha performed these powers on a more impressive scale. Vice-Versa with his burly long arms for chokeholds and punches? Yaksha may have long thin arms but they can do the same and more such as stretching very far and wrapping foes up like a mummy, turning into slings, tripping foes up, etc. Body Control and shapeshifting? Yaksha can turn his entire body into different objects and tools compared to Vice-Versa as well to survive hits that flattens the demon hat. Flight? Yaksha can turn his arms into a propeller and fly or even have Sonia with her tongue be the propeller instead and turn his arms into plane wings and have them both fly together high in the sky. Meanwhile, Vice-Versa can glide for only a few seconds and doesn't get off the ground much higher than a fighter or two tall. This also means Sonia and Yaksha can dominate in the air and can easily control the battle midair, something Cerebella will struggle with. At least for Vice-Versa, punching a boulder into a diamond is a more impressive feat compared to Yaksha just chucking boulders from the ground. And its burly arms can grab hold of Yaksha and reel him (and Sonia) in for a counterattack or tied him up for an incap. Ultimately however, Yaksha outclasses Vice Versa when it comes to shared abilities. That said, when it comes to exclusive powers, Vice Versa wins with the more reliable transmutation projectile reflector compared to Yaksha's self-defeating petrification, useless thermal vision and the very situational magic portal wormhole barf.
Without their hats, Sonia can still hold her own with her tongue, which is very versatile and can keep Cerebella at bay. However, said tongue can be used against her should Cerebella and Vice Versa grab hold of it and prepare for a counterattack. Even so, Sonia's other long range option is her intense wind, which Cerebella has no answer to, unless Sonia shoots a wind projectile, which then Cerebella can deflect it. Should Sonia bring a block of ice however, then show's over for Cerebella as she has no resistances to it, giving Sonia a clear win with insta-freeze. Super Chi can boost Sonia's speed and outpace and blitz Cerebella, but given the speed to be on par with laser-timing, it might not help much as Cerebella could react to it and leaves Sonia crippled if she abuses it too much. Her healing kiss lets her reinvigorate Yaksha should he ever get tired, giving Sonia more opportunities to prolong and even outlast her opponent, even if it's just benefiting Yaksha.
The biggest boon however would be Sonia (and Yaksha) toon force. Sonia can handle being squashed, flattened and even being burned without any ill effect. While this does not make her invincible, these showings suggest Sonia can handle taking extreme physical attacks well. Cerebella unfortunately relies on Vice Versa's brute strength which means it may not be enough to damage Sonia head on.
Finally, Sonia's curse...is actually not useful at all here. Getting to activate it is a tall task, given Cerebella doesn't know Sonia prior and her stubbornness and bullheadedness along with Sonia's cocky and arrogant personality already makes it hard for Cerebella to like Sonia. Plus, Sonia's beauty doesn't really draw in everyone. While it did work on a tank driver, other male characters aren't affected by it and treat her neutrally. More evident with Mighty Ray who has a beef with her. So Cerebella won't really fall for her looks. Even if the curse did work and Cerebella falls in love with Sonia, her being a Yaksha doesn't make her lose and would make things worse as Sonia now has to deal with another lovestruck Yaksha.
Cerebella on the other hand, has pretty much her hand-to-hand and feet combat, but only does this to assist Vice Versa on certain attacks. Fisticuffs is more of Vice Versa's job anyways. Against a girl with a long tongue and can blow you away, relying on your own fisticuffs can only help you so much.
Sonia and Yaksha beats Cerebella and Vice Versa out in terms of abilities. Yaksha can do what Vice Versa does but with better showings and is more versatile of the two while Sonia has her own powers to control space, range and has more powers to cripple and even incapitating Cerebella. Cerebella and Vice Versa do have more reliable powers that don't have a significant drawback but it's not enough to overcome Sonia and Yaksha's powers...
Forms/Summons
...until we get to her Variants. Once Cerebella summons herself with these, she stands a bit more of a chance. Many of them have resurrections, hit invulnerability, contact damage, health regeneration, damage reduction, and inflicting bleed, all of which gives her more options to outlast Sonia and play on the defensive. Attack buffs and even a one-hit kill if Sonia's health is low enough also gives her means for Cerebella to deal with and even bypass the AP and durability stat gap. Cerebella can wear down Sonia while enduring and healing by herself, giving her the opportunity to even the playing field. These variants do come with the downside in that the aforementioned abilities are only exclusive to certain Cerebellas. If one variant is down, then obviously the ability they had is now unusable. Plus, many of them are on a time limit within seconds or require special conditions, so a variant Cerebella needs to capitalize the effect fast and make the most of it. Abilities affecting the enemy's Blockbuster is rather useless due to Sonia not being a Skullgirls character nor having an equivalent Blockbuster (super) of her own (unless one counts the Hidden Kingdom Showdown flash game), and even then that's more of affecting a game mechanic.
Sonia and Yaksha in turn...really can't use their forms. Her swan form requires to enter a location that she has no means to reach when put in a neutral territory. Even then, the swan is more of a downgrade as she loses many of her useful abilities in exchange for wings that do the same wind blowing power like her tongue but now loses said tongue's versatility and is limited to just kicking and punching...er, flapping, I guess. Yakshatron and Scorpion form are unusable as well, due to requiring other First Squad members, which breaks the "no outside help" rule.
Tertiary Factors
Both Sonia and Cerebella can fight with their hats together and have shown to act in tandem with them, making them fairly even in terms of skills.
When it comes to training, Cerebella has better formal training thanks to being trained by the Medici Mafia and implied to be working there since at a young age. Sonia's training is more difficult to determine, given her unknown age and unknown time she stayed in Big Green. Even then her only known training activity is just lifting dumbbells with her tongue. When it comes to experience, both Sonia and Cerebella have dealt with many combatants with weird abilities. Sonia battling in a war however, gives her greater combat experience as she has dealt with many armies of animals before and being used to bigger scales of fights. Some battles were achieved through competitions however, so many victories aren't done through besting in combat. Cerebella is an accomplished solo fighter but finds herself as more of a lackey when paired with more powerful fighters like Eliza and Black Delilah. Sonia has arguable better combat experience due to being in a war against an animal army while Cerebella has better defined training.
Personality wise, Sonia's cocky and arrogant attitude can easily blindside Cerebella and get her to cave into her stubbornness and close-mindedness, though Sonia would likely have that backfire on her once Cerebella gives her comeuppance.
When it comes to bonds, one would think Cerebella takes this at first, as she and Vice-Versa don't fight each other at all, barring the timeout animation. Unlike Sonia who she and Yaksha tend to conflict with together at points, mostly from Yaksha's jealously or Sonia's vanity. These conflict don't last long however, and they made up by the end of whatever happened. Yaksha and Sonia has displayed more affection and loyalty to each other more often than nought. Like when Yaksha sacrificed himself to save Sonia from the lions by wrapping them up and turning into stone or taking on Snake King's hypnosis to protect Sonia from being turned into an egg. Sonia returns the favor by beating up Snake King's minions in response to get to him and freeing everyone from the egg transformation curse with her flute to save Yaksha and everyone else. Even when Sonia was charred which ruined her look from Ray's eye blast, Yaksha still loves her for who she is which even impressed Queen Peacock. Not to say Cerebella doesn't had a bond with her hat, far from it. Her posing with Vice-Versa in certain victory animations and many moves that has them working together do show they have their moments as well. Sonia just happens to display more showings of affection with Yaksha.
Conclusion
To conclude, the winner of this fight ultimately lends to Mystique Sonia.
Stat-wise, Sonia takes the strength and AP along with durability, many of these feats are well over Cerebella's direct feats and scaling, The exception would be speed, which is more on not many speed calcs for Hero: 108 and Skullgirls hinging on a questionable lightspeed feat. Cerebella might be faster or possibly ties depending on what scaling you give to Sonia. For now, tie seems like a best bet for Sonia as she can scale to Mighty Ray's light/laser beam mirror deflect in Crocodile Castle so she should at least somewhat stack up to Cerebella.
Arsenal and powers are an interesting case of Quantity VS Quality. Sonia has more equipment and powers, but many of them are either useless or situational and some have serious tradeoffs. Cerebella meanwhile has less options but are more reliable and have less drawbacks. In paper, this sounds like Cerebella would win out in this category but Sonia still has a couple powers to snag a win. Her cold wind can freeze Cerebella in an instant, her wind in general is one long range option that Cerebella cannot reliably deal with. Both Sonia and Yaksha still have abilities like their Toon Force to deal with Cerebella and Vice Versa's brute force and stretchy abilities that give more flexibility and versatility for offensive and defensive options and utility. While Cerebella does lack the hefty drawbacks compared to Sonia, she doesn't have enough means for her items and powers to force an advantage. When it comes to stat changing options, the quantity vs quality becomes inverse, interestingly enough. Variant powers are Cerebella's remotely fair chance to take on Sonia and has plenty of buffs and debuffs to boost Cerebella as well as wearing down Sonia. Many of them however, last for only a few seconds compared to Sonia's Super Chi and Strength Buns which last much longer. Even with Super Chi and Strength Buns' drawbacks, the power gap means Sonia can end Cerebella in one blow before the time limit could end. Even if Sonia is bloated and sick if overloaded on buns, Cerebella runs at the risk of getting grabbed by Sonia and getting launched into the atmosphere should Cerebella closes in and given her grappling nature, she most likely will.
Training, experience and being skilled with their hats in combat evens out for both girls. Sonia and Yaksha edges out in loyalty however, meaning they will far more likely to have each others back and protect each other when the going gets rough.
While Cerebella has better formal training and ways to combat her long range options, Sonia takes the strength, durability, varied powers and loyalty to show her who's the real queen of the hat. There's no mystique about it, Sonia takes it on this hat-ic showdown.
Summary

- Widens the power and speed gap further with strength buns and Super Chi
- Yaksha outclasses Vice-Versa with better versions of similar abilities and is more versatile
- Her tongue, wind projectile, boulders and Yaksha's long arms can keep Cerebella at a distance...
- Her windstream is a long-range option that Cerebella has no reliable counters for
- Flight gives her control of the battle in air and gives her better mobility
- Curse is an instant game ender...
- Her cocky and arrogant attitude would make it easy for Cerebella to lose focus and get her mad...
- Gotten used to blunt and physical attacks before (she did get flattened) so Cerebella's brute force might be meaningless
- Despite their fighting, has stronger display of friendship (or romance?) and loyalty
- Has more equipment...
Equals
- Both them and their hats coordinate well with their actions in combat
- Possibly ties in speed
Disadvantages
- Lacks formal training compared to Cerebella
- ...but Vice-Versa can reel them in for a punish and counterattack.
- Chucking boulders makes it easy for Cerebella to reflect projectiles
- ...But Cerebella may not like Sonia and Sonia never has a peacock feather in hand, making it unlikely this curse would come into play
- ...though would also backfire on Sonia and get her comeuppance
- ...but most of her equipment are situational.
- Wimpy virgin hat
- Even among animated goth girl crushes, she's pretty overlooked
- Insert funny Devaintart fetish joke here
Cerebella
Advantages
- Better training thanks to being taught by the likes of Black Delila and Medici Mafia
- Can counter Sonia and Yaksha's long range options like her tongue, chucked boulders and long arms by reeling them in, letting Cerebella get the upper hand in her ideal range or reflect projectiles to strike back...
- Variant abilities lets her boost her damage and give her more endurance options (health regen, hit invulnerability, damage reduction, resurrections) potentially softening the stat gap...
- Punches the best
- Chad strong hat
Mogs Sonia- Actually a decent fighting game grappler
Equals
- Both them and their hats coordinate well with their actions in combat
- Possibly ties in speed
Disadvantages
- Loses the stat trinity, barring speed (maybe)
- Vice-Versa gets outclassed by Yaksha on similar abilities
- ...however, she has no way to get around her wind
- ...but these abilities are exclusive to certain variants, meaning Cerebella cannot get them together and has to pick and choose, forgoing one set at the cost of the other
- Brute force might not be effective due to Sonia getting used to being flattened or struck down with little to no ill effect
- Sonia's cockiness might worsen Cerebella's bullheadedness and make her prone to rage
- Will have a hard time catching up to Sonia once she takes flight and her own flight is very limited
- Abilities affecting Blockbusters are useless due to Sonia not having the same mechanic
- Killed best cat girl, an unforgivable sin >:(
